Hopefully getting a Monster 696 myself, goes for about your price range, good solid beginner/intermediate bike, amazing sounding cans and its very short, just like me

(30 inch inside leg, and I will "just" be able to keep my foot flat on the ground when at a traffic light rofl)...
If you have the cash you upgrade to Termi exhausts and you can hear the bass difference in the sound (plus a few extra BHP); insurance is a lower band so quite affordable compared to a 'busa

In recent bike mag tests the Triumph street triple is the best middleweight bike around for a relatively cheap insurance rate - it's also a "hooligan" bike so it is loud, noisy and fast enough in the mid-range to pull easy wheelies, but a bit erratic at higher speeds... and in another test where they compared a Kwak ER-6N (same as 6F but naked as opposed to faired), Monster 696, BMW F800R and Aprilia Shiver GT - they said the ER-6 is nimble and predictable and a good commuter, Aprilia is comfy and handles well but lacks zing (power delivery is linear and lacks 'punch'), BMW is powerful and revvy (also used by a stuntman for tricks - Christian Pfeiffer), the 696 is best looking and great handling for twisty roads - their conclusion was that "if they decided with their heads they'd go for the BMW and if they decided on their hearts it would be a 696."
You should check out the bikes listed above on youtube or via online reviews and see what you think - but they are all easily in your price range and aren't too scary a motor to start out with as a relative newcomer to biking - Hope this helps!

Oh yeah, my friends who ride bikes tell me to not go for a GSXR 750 or a Honda CBR600RR unless I have at least a bit of experience under my belt cos although they have similar engine sizes to the above they are better tuned engines so are bad-asses with high insurance (in UK anyway) and not really for beginners, unless you fancy wtfpwning yourself lol!
